M82 is the prototype for what is often referred to as the "Class II" Irregular Galaxy. Characterized by its highly chaotic structure, the strong radio source at its center, and the bright filaments being ejected from it, M82 is showing the results of the strong interaction between it and the larger galaxy M81 (not visible).
